Get Outside, Poughkeepsie!

There are places to discover in your community, creating some experiences that you will have for years to come

We noticed that people were not enjoying the outdoors enough during the pandemic. So we decided to make a podcast, short videos to spread the word to educate people about the outdoors so they have a better experience, and to encourage them to get outside. We also wanted to tackle some misconceptions that people have about nature.

StoryMap

We thank the Vassar Hudson Valley Mappers (HVM) for giving us a platform to present our project. The podcasts we created, the educational videos, and the map of stories of people’s outdoor experiences in Poughkeepsie are all housed in our StoryMap. Since we couldn’t meet in person due to the pandemic, the HVM met with us regularly on Zoom to teach us how to create a StoryMap, gave us advice on improvements, and they helped us brainstorm ideas so we could further push the project in the direction we intended it to go. It was very interesting, fun and we got to use technology to showcase what we were doing. Explore our story map below and add your own experiences in nature!

Damion

Hey, my name is Damion and I’m a junior at PHS. After high school I’m going in to business. Some of my hobbies are bike rides, skateboarding, and tracks & field. My favorite thinking to do in NCLI is going on hikes.
Tywana

I will be in my senior year of high school. I would love to go into business as my career choice. I love to edit. I enjoy the activities that we do.
Olivia/Oliver

Im Olivia/Oliver going into 12th grade. I go to Poughkeepsie High School (PHS). One of my favorite things to do with NCLI is eel fishing and after I graduated I will be going to college with a major in accounting&finance with a minor in art/media. And I have the hopes of going into service with the Air force after college.
Ja'sire

I am going to be a Freshman in Highschool. After highschool im planning on going to college. I like to play basketball and hang with friends. I look forward to getting to learn more about the program.
Genesis

l started in mid September of 2020 at PHS. l was thinking about be coming a baker or a singer. l be playing sports, dancing and make youtube videos. I think making new things out of nature was my favorite out of all the things.
Evelynn

Hi, my name is Evelynn. I am going into 10th grade at Poughkeepsie High School. After going to college I want to work as a hairstylist. My hobbies when not being at NCLI is to do hair, nails, clean and hang out with friends. Also, when working with NCLI I like to work on projects together and be outside at parks.

Sutanya graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in June 2021.
Emily

Emily graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in June 2020 and continued to be a part of the crew until December 2020.
